Strengthening Families One Individual at a Time

Kate called us because she’d been raped in her own home by someone she knew.

Jamal came to the Teen Resource & Activity Center (TRAC) everyday but he never spoke. The other kids bullied him mercilessly. But he never missed a day and he never talked. That was five years ago.

Margaret never wanted to leave the home she’d built with her long-dead husband. It held all her happiest memories. So she didn’t let on to anyone how bad things were getting. But a good neighbor noticed and turned to us for help.

Rosa’s kids had been taken from her. Department of Social Services sent her to us – they didn’t know what else to do. They couldn’t talk to her. She threw things and kicked over trash barrels, cursed and screamed at her caseworker.

Today Kate has seen her attacker convicted. She and her family are rebuilding a sense of safety and security. It’s not easy. Kate was shaken to the core of her being, but she’ll tell you she’s making progress, thanks to the support of Family Services Sexual Assault team.

The TRAC staff became Jamal’s family in a safe home-away-from-home. As his trust in the staff grew, he shared the wounds left by his childhood traumas. They nurtured him, taught him the ways of the world, and shouted bravo for his every success. Today he’s a TRAC leader, participating on the Youth Council, advising the staff on Center programs. He’s on the basketball team. Good grades. Some days he doesn’t stop talking.

Margaret, her neighbors, her children, and the staff of the Elder Support program have worked out a plan to keep Margaret in the home she loves. Margaret learned from the Elder Support staff that asking for help didn’t mean giving up.

And Rosa – it was a long, hard road. But today she and her family are doing well together. Turns out she was frantic about her kids’ safety. She’d grown up in foster care herself. Her experience was so exceedingly traumatic that she tried to commit suicide by setting herself on fire when she was nine.

Rosa loved her kids fiercely, but she didn’t know how to be a parent. She’d never had any good parenting herself. She had to learn to take care of herself before she could care for them. But they’re back together now. And Rosa knows she can turn to Family Services for help when she feels overwhelmed. She knows she’s not alone when the going gets tough.

These are just a few of the families who turn to Family Services every day.
